Chief Technology Officer


Specialising in the development and implementation of enterprise mobility solutions and services for supply chain and field service operations, Blackbay is a global leader, successfully working with a growing list of premium clients including Royal Mail, Australia Post, Tyco, Dyson and DHL building innovative mobile solutions, and working on diverse and complex projects that are transforming their business.

Blackbay continue to go from strength to strength achieving a three year average growth rate of over 40%. People are critical to this growth, helping the company  transform its solutions and its delivery to customers.

Due to global expansion and product investment the need has come to expand the Executive Team with the position of Chief Technology Officer being created. A proven track record within a fast paced, evolving Software Development environments is absolutely essential to the success of this appointment and you will be suitably supported to achieve within your role.

The Chief Technology Officer will report to the CEO.  They will set the strategic technology direction for the company and have responsibility for Development, Test and Customer Support.


This is a strategic position that will require an exceptional manager with a background in IT service delivery, agile software development, project management, business intelligence, hosted systems knowledge and experience of enterprise mobility solution development.

The position will be based in the UK or the USA, but will require substantial time in New Zealand during the initial 3-6 month period in order to familiarise the successful candidate with current processes, the APAC market/customers/partners and Blackbay staff.  Periodic travel thereafter.

This role will require working non-standard hours and international travel from time to time.

The emphasis of this role is on:

  • Setting Blackbay’s technical strategy for Product and ensuring adherence to and delivery of the strategic roadmap.
  • Refining the strategy as market conditions necessitate.
  • Creating and applying the Development methodology used to build and maintain Blackbay’s Products and Customer Projects.
  • Ensuring that all Development is followed by rigorous Testing.
  • Global 24*7*365 Customer Support.
  • Being the company spokesperson on Technology matters with customers and at market related events.

The ideal candidate for this executive position will have:

  • IT, Software Engineering Degree or proven experience.
  • 10+ years’ experience in the development and implementation of IT systems.
  • Experience in Microsoft SQL Server technology and licensing.
  • Understanding of database and server management.
  • 5+ years’ experience in management of personnel (minimum of 20).
  • Experience leading a team in Agile product development methodologies including Scrum.
  • Experience of delivering ‘follow the sun’ customer support and resolution.
  • Project management skills.
  • First class written documentation reporting skills, verbal and presentation communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current technology and vendor landscape and future trends, particularly in the Enterprise mobility space.
  • Experience with the architecture, design and implementation of large scale, mission-critical enterprise business systems.
  • Understanding of technology strategy development and technology governance processes.
  • Strong background in integration of enterprise solutions across disparate front-end, communications and back-end technologies.
  • Current knowledge of industry standards for software development, systems integration and support (agile, ITIL etc.).
  • Proven attention to detail, ensuring complex and highly detailed requirements are satisfied to the highest level.
  • Ability to design and manage own work programme and that of others while achieving timely results in a commercial environment.

Intermediate Developer (EMEA)

The company is currently recruiting an intermediate developer to be based in our Derby Office.

Location:                  

  • Derby, UK.  Travel to customer sites throughout the UK and Europe will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Software design, development, testing and documentation tasks and/or projects assigned by the Senior Developers, Technical Leads,Project Managers.
  • Working as part of a team and at times, offering guidance and mentoring to junior software developers as required.
  • Delivery of software design and development tasks to time and budget. Limited responsibility for managing aspects of a project tasks.
  • At times, and in conjunction with the Project Managers, responsible for liaising with Blackbay clients regarding technical project/software matters.

Qualifications and Personal Attributes

  • Computer Science degree or equivalent Relevant Microsoft Certification
  • 2+ years relevant development experience
  • Experience with design and development through the full product development lifecycle
  • Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in developing data driven applications, primarily using the Microsoft .NET Framework, (C++/ C#) and web technologies
  • Good Windows Mobile or embedded systems development experience
  • Experience in workflow analysis and the re-engineering of business processes
  • Strong experience in database design and some exposure to optimization especially MS SQL Server
  • Experience with TCP/IP protocols, wireless networks, mobile radio or cellular systems
  • Enthusiasm to formulate and tackle new IT initiatives
  • A working knowledge of Local Area & Wide Area networks

Senior Tester (EMEA)

The company is currently recruiting a senior tester to be based in our Derby office.

Working both independently and within a team, the senior tester provides status feedback of the Blackbay software quality to the Project Lead and Manager. The role is responsible for working closely with Development, Professional Services and maintenance teams for various projects in order to test releases and fixes as part of the software development life cycle. Documentation and Test Execution plays a very important part of the day to day duties. The person who wishes to fill this role must be very proactive and able to adapt to a dynamic workplace.

  • Derby, UK.  Travel to customer sites throughout the UK and Europe will be required.

Responsibilities:

  • To review and support the Business Analysts documents and provide detailed feedback
  • Review release documents and provide clear and concise step by step bug logging to the development team
  • To provide clear and honest feedback of the state of the Solution to the Team Lead or Manager so they can make good decisions about the release of the Solution
  • Supporting the Project Lead when the released Solution is in the customers UAT environment
  • Working as part of a team and at times offering guidance and mentoring to junior testers
  • Owning, managing and running the production of manual test scripts and their execution using appropriate testing tools and techniques, whilst conforming to the agreed acceptance criteria and standards
  • Providing input to test plans and strategy 
  • Generating and executing manual test scripts
  • Setting up of test environments, test data and test-harnesses as necessary
  • Ensuring that documentation is produced detailing test failures and successes compared with pre-determined criteria
  • Reporting test results to the Project Lead and other colleagues in a clear and concise manner
  • Liaising with other members of the Project Team as required gathering their understanding and agreement of test plan and scripts.
  • Standing in for the Test Lead when required 
  • Potential for travelling on site to customers to support UAT testing and integration as required
  • Liaise with New Zealand Development and test teams to ensure excellent Project handovers, skill transfer, team integration and to build positive and strong relations between the European and New Zealand Development Centres

Specialist Skills and Knowledge:

  • Appropriate testing qualifications and significant experience in the testing field
  • Excellent manual testing skills.

  • A good knowledge of test processes and methodologies, with experience in both White Box and Black Box testing
  • Database – able to write and carry out SQL scripts
  • SQL Server 2000, 2005 & 2008
  • Experience with interface testing (web services, csv output)
  • Installation of software components
  • Knowledge of the Event Viewer and other relevant diagnostics on the Microsoft Windows platform
  • Understanding of virtual environments and setting these up
  • An understanding of GPRS and other networks and protocols
  • Skills in MS Office applications

Enterprise Account Manager (EMEA)

The company is currently recruiting an Enterprise Account Manager to work in its London Head Office.

The Enterprise Account Manager is responsible for sales of Blackbay’s enterprise mobility software solutions within the Transport, Logistics and Service sectors in the UK and mainland Europe, including development of new business and relationships with existing customers. 

Candidates should have a broad base of selling skills and experience gained in selling software at senior executive level. In addition the role requires someone highly organised and motivated with excellent communication skills and a keen interest in the technology and software sectors.

The role is responsible for the design and development of a specific technical solution. The position relates to all aspects of Blackbay software development in respect to projects and core products, with key requirements to work as part of a wider project team, collaborate with other Senior Developers to determine best practice and offer guidance and mentoring to more junior Developers as required.
